BOYZ II MEN, TLC to Cover L’Arc-en-Ciel Songs on First Tribute Album!

L’Arc-en-Ciel’s best-of live DVD “LIVE TWENITY” and a new tribute album, “L’Arc-en-Ciel TRIBUTE,” are to be released simultaneously on June 13.

“LIVE TWENITY” features 20 “best” tracks carefully selected from among live shows the band has performed throughout its career. Look for previously unseen footage included as a bonus track. Specifications and track listing will be announced soon.

To be released on the same day, “L’Arc-en-Ciel TRIBUTE” is the band’s first tribute album, featuring their songs covered by overseas artists. An amazing cast of artists like BOYZ II MEN, Clementine, Daniel Powter, Eric Martin, JOHN 5, Maxi Priest, Orianthi, TLC, Vince Neil, and ZEBRAHEAD add their original touch to L’Arc-en-Ciel’s most famous songs.

An amazing cast indeed. However, this one is not getting my money.

As for the Live Twenity, already ordered it. Wonder what criteria they are using for the "best". I am sure we all have our favorite performances for each song. Plus we already own the shows anyway. Icon_biggrin

I am really weary about the cover songs I admit. I'm not sure how well english artists are going to cover Japanese songs. Maybe they'll sing english versions?

And pop artists doing rock covers...ehh..

Seriously, though, John 5? THE John 5?! The one that used to play guitar for Marilyn Manson?! Heart attack achieved.

My thoughts are that the songs will be in English. They are trying to push L'Arc more to western audiences. What would they achieve if they sang them in Japanese? They might as well release the original versions then.

I just want to see what words they come up with for Metropolis. Icon_domokun

I wouldn't mind seeing a cover done by other Japanese bands.....SID, Acid Black Cherry, TM Revolution, Glay, MUCC to name a few. Anyone on Danger Crue that already knows or had performed with Hyde. That I would buy.

It might be selfish but I hope none of the covers make it to the radio.

People tend to like whatever version they hear first and it would be heartbreaking for people to think like... Boyz II Men version is better than the original. It would be so devastating for other artists to get the recognition for L'Arc's work.

If I go to school on day and someone is like, "Did you hear TLC's new song?" I might slam my head into the wall.

I would have mixed feelings if that happens, but yes, that would likely be my reaction [same as you Tokyo]...mostly because I've seen it happen to other covers and it irks me like "Seriously?! The original is always the BEST!" but let's hope that it doesn't happen or more likely these artist are aware that they MUST talk about how AWESOME would be if people listened the original song instead

Chances are this album won't even be released in the US, so the only way people might know of its existence is if they look it up online, in which case they are bound to see that it's a cover. Rather or not that will encourage them to look up and support the original version is an entirely different matter.

I guess I really must be the only one who is actually looking forward to this. I mean... John 5. John Motherfucking 5. That and Vince Neil, Orianthi, the latter of whom is probably most qualified of any on the list to perform a cover of a L'Arc song. As for Vince Neil, HYDE has expressed several times that he's a fan of Motley Crue and that he draws direct influence from them, so I'm personally interested to see how this works out. That and it's cool to see western artists cover a Japanese band. It's been exclusively the other way around for far too long, and while I understand language barrier has a lot to do with that, I still always hated how being from Asia came to be such a barrier. But with L'Arc performing at Madison Square Garden and then this being released, that barrier seems to be slowly but surely breaking.

I don't see the purpose of this CD if they don't release it in the USA. My thought was that they were trying to get L'Arc out to the general public by using this means. I could be very wrong though.

It wouldn't be entirely pointless. It's not like these musicians aren't popular in Japan or anything. For publicity's sake, it would make sense for them to release the album in the US, but L'Arc has enough experience to know that there aren't exactly many US record labels and distributors out there who are willing to take them even with the support of western musicians, and the ones that are usually become defunct shortly thereafter, as is the case with Tofu Records. Perhaps they're hoping that the fans who buy it will show it to their friends who are fans of the artists on the CD and say, "They covered my favorite Japanese rock band! Now you have to check them out, right?!"

>_>
<_<

Or it could be a similar case to when VAMPS decided to release all DVD's region-free... except for the DVD that took place in a different region.
