Title: Ambiguous fish or Memories
Characters/Pairings: K.A.Z x Ponyo
Rating: G
Genre: whatever, I also don't car
Summary: K.A.Z is fishing, catches Ponyo and finally finds out that she is a girl
It had been an extensive month of touring for VAMPS. At a hot weekend at the end of July they finally had two days off to spend with their families and friends. After a pleasant visit at his parents, K.A.Z decided to indulge in one of his favorite hobbies. Fishing. He went to a shadowy river beneath some trees, sat down on a huge stone and hung his fishing rod into the water. Only after a few minutes he had already caught a few nice exemplars and was happy to see how his bucket grew fuller and fuller. If it continued like that he could maybe invite his mates for a barbecue later.
All of a sudden, when he pulled out his next fish, he noticed another, smaller fish clinging to the one he caught. He pulled the fishing line close. His eyes grew wider and wider. The small fish was actually holding on to the other fish with some little rudimentary arms. “What the…” K.A.Z carefully grabbed the fish at his back and parted it from the other one when it turned its head and spit a fountain of water into his face. “Eee!!!” K.A.Z dropped his fishing rod in shock. The little fish looked at him with big round eyes. It had a face. And hair.
K.A.Z gaped at the little wiggling creature in his hand with an open mouth. Had someone put something in his root beer? This thing just couldn’t be real. “Itai!” it suddenly screeched. “Itaitaitaitaitai!” “Wha…?” K.A.Z quickly stuffed the little fish into his bucket and stepped back. This thing could also talk? Nervously K.A.Z fumbled in his shoulder bag and pulled out a package of cigarettes. “Itai! Itai!” The little fish jumped up and down in the bucket and pointed with its little arms at the fish that was still wriggling about at the fishing rod K.A.Z had dropped. “Itai! Itai! Itai!” The screeching became unbearable. K.A.Z deeply inhaled the smoke. “Okay. Okay.” He gazed at the little fish again and shook his head. “I will put your friend back into the water, okay. Just stop screaming, okay. Everything is… alright.” With shaking hands K.A.Z removed the fish as carefully as he could from the hook and threw it back into the water. “Look?” K.A.Z said to the little fish. “I put it back, alright?” He blew the last clouds of smoke into the air and sat down beside the bucket. He asked himself if the daily tour dates had tired him out so much that he was having hallucinations now. “Arigatou! Arigatou!” The little fish peeped happily and made little somersaults in the water. K.A.Z wiped his forehead. “You’re welcome.” He mumbled and stared tiredly into the water. “Ponyo! Ponyo!” It called now. K.A.Z slowly turned his head and looked at the little fish again. It showed him a broad smile. “Ponyo???” He remembered the latest Studio Ghibli trailer he had watched last week. This definitely couldn’t be real. “You’re the little fish guy from the movie, uh? Sure.” He pulled another cigarette out of his package. “Iya! Iya! Iya!” Ponyo protested. “Itai! Itai! Itaitaitaitaitai!!!” Ponyo jumped angrily up and down in its bucket again. “What is it again?” K.A.Z asked. “The other fish in the bucket are dead already. I’m sorry, it’s no use to put them back.” The little fish shook its head energetically. “Iya! Iya! Itai! Itaitaitaitaitai!” It pointed at his cigarette. “Now that’s too much.” K.A.Z anxiously put the cigarette back into the package, took the bucket and quickly drove home. He needed something to eat and a good rest for sure.
At home he carefully put Ponyo into a fishbowl and put it into his living room. He realized he didn’t want Ponyo to see how he chopped the other fish. “I can’t believe this is happening to me...” he mumbled when he returned to the kitchen and started to prepare everything for his meal. With agiated movements he took some green onions and cut them into little pieces. “Ouch!” He had been so unconcentrated that he had cut his finger. “Shit!” He stumbled into the living room to search for a band-aid when his eyes caught Ponyo waving at him. K.A.Z sighed and approached the little fish with his finger held high. “What is it little buddy? See? I hurt myself. Itai! Itai!” K.A.Z said in a low voice. If anybody would see him talking to a fish like that now he would be declared as mental, he thought. A drop of blood fell into the fishbowl. “Oh!” Ponyo looked at him with big round eyes. “Itai!” The little fish jumped up and nudged his finger. K.A.Z nodded and smiled. “Hai hai. Itai. But just a little.” He showed Ponyo his bleeding finger. Suddenly the fish snapped for it and K.A.Z felt a little tongue licking over his wound. “Wha…?” Ponyo let go of his finger again and grinned. “Help!” the little fish beamed at him. “Like Sosuke! Help!” K.A.Z stared at his finger. The wound was gone. “Thank you.” he whispered. “But I think I need to lie down now. I don’t feel so fine…” “Wait! Wait!” Ponyo stretched out a little arm to him. “Out! Out!” “Out?” K.A.Z asked weakly. Meanwhile he tried to suppress the thought that he had to have hallucinations right now and tried to behave as normal as he could in the situation he was experiencing now. He sighed again and lifted Ponyo out of the water. He put a finger under each of the little fish’s arms and moved it onto the table. “Thank you!” Ponyo peeped and grinned. Then all of a sudden a shiver went though the little fish’s body. K.A.Z narrowed his eyes. Somehow Ponyo seemed to grow a bit bigger. Then the little arms started to expand and plop – plop! hands were popping out of it. “Oh my god.” K.A.Z sat down on a living room chair and stared at the little fish that was not so little anymore. “Mushrooms.” he said. “But I didn’t take mushrooms.” Now the fish started to grow legs and feet were popping out of it. “Ponyo alright.” K.A.Z mumbled. “Yeah. A fish that turns into a human. Okay, I get it.” Meanwhile Ponyo stood on legs on the table and had the size of a little child. The short hair had grown into long red strands that were falling over Ponyo’s shoulders now. K.A.Z gazed at the red dress Ponyo wore. “You’re a girl?” he asked in disbelief. “Un!” Ponyo answered and smiled. She still continued to grow. He chubby legs became long and slender and her arms gracile. Her childlike face turned into that of a young woman. K.A.Z swallowed hard. Ponyo looked beautiful. “Can you help me down?” Ponyo asked in a bright voice. K.A.Z just nodded and helped her to get down from the table. Shyly he casted his eyes away from her. “The same happened with Sosuke.” she explained. “When I swallowed his blood I transformed into a human. I was a little girl then.” “I see.” K.A.Z mumbled although he didn’t understand anything at all. “What a weird movie.” “Movie?” Ponyo asked curiously. “Forget it.” K.A.Z carefully glanced at her face again. She had cute little freckles all over her bright face. K.A.Z blushed. It was the sweetest thing he had seen in a long time. “Look, Ponyo…” He cleared his throat. “Since you are not a fish anymore… eee… would you like to join and eat dinner with me?” He noticed Ponyo’s eyes darkening a bit. “Oh! I’m sorry!” The fish came to his mind. “I will make something else, okay? Tell me what you like.” “Ham.” she said shortly. “Ham?” K.A.Z scratched his head. “Very well.”
Half an hour later he put two plates with scrambled eggs and ham on the dinner table. In the meantime, Ponyo had examined his piano by randomly hitting the keys here and there. “What is that?” she asked curiously. “A piano. You play music with it.” K.A.Z explained. “If you want to I can play something for you later. Or something on the guitar. That’s also a musical instrument.” “Aha!” Ponyo smiled and interrupted her play when she saw the ham. “Itadakimasu.” K.A.Z friendly bowed to her. Ponyo laughed and bowed back to him. Obviously she didn’t knew the Japanese habits. She was a fish after all, K.A.Z thought.
After they had finished dinner, Ponyo’s eyelids grew heavier and heavier. The sun was already setting outside. “You look a bit tired, Ponyo. Maybe you should sleep, it would do you good.” K.A.Z suggested politely. “First you play the piano to me.” Ponyo insisted with a girlish smile. “Alright then. I was in the middle of composing something lately. Maybe…” K.A.Z recalled the melody in his head. “Okay, come Ponyo, sit down beside me at the piano, I’ll play something.” There was just enough space for both of them on the piano chair. K.A.Z tried his best not to touch her, but Ponyo leaned her head against his shoulder and smiled, waiting for him to start playing. K.A.Z took a deep breath. The presence of Ponyo, her head against his shoulder, her innocent smile made him feel all warm inside. He started to play. He recalled the last time when he had tried the song. Somehow he had gotten stuck, because he had felt tired and even a bit lonely and empty so that he couldn’t transform into notes what he had wanted to express. Now the melody was just flowing out of him. It was as if Ponyo’s energy was streaming into his arms down to his fingers and made them play the song by themselves without K.A.Z actually controlling it. The melody was filling the whole room. K.A.Z completely lost himself playing it and felt his heart beating happily when he realized that this was exactly the song he had wanted to compose. When the last notes faded, K.A.Z turned his head and saw that Ponyo had fallen asleep with a happy smile on her face. “Ponyo…” he whispered gently. Carefully he carried her over to his bed and covered her with a blanket. Meanwhile he had completely forgotten that she was actually a fish. He was humming the melody of the song and stroked over her cheek. “Kawaii…” he whispered to himself. He switched off the light and crawled behind her. Her hair was tickling him in his face. It had a slight smell of seaweed, but K.A.Z didn’t care. Tenderly he put an arm around her and gave her a heartfelt hug. It was completely dark outside now. He heard the automatic blinds closing and with fragments of his new song in his head he fell asleep, still holding Ponyo in his arms.
On the next morning the loud ringing of his phone made K.A.Z awake with a start. Drowsily he grabbed the receiver. “Moshi moshi…” K.A.Z yawned. “Mornin’, K.A.Z!” It was Hyde. “It’s already twelve. Where are you?” “Eee…sorry…” K.A.Z had completely forgotten he had invited him for lunch. “Stayed awake long yesterday. Finished my song, you know.” “Song? Aaah. How is it called?” Hyde asked curiously. K.A.Z turned his head back to the bed, searching for Ponyo. She was gone. “Pon… pon… eee… Panda.” He said then affectedly. “Panda.” His eyes wandered over to the fishbowl that was also empty. “Panda?” Hyde chuckled. “Alright then. Come over.” K.A.Z hung up and let himself sink back on the bed. So had it been all a dream? He ran with his fingers over the pillow and found a few red long hairs on it. “Ponyo…” he buried his face in the pillow and inhaled the smell of seaweed. With a sigh he got up. “Memories. “ he said. “Memories…”
