(08-06-2009, 07:53 PM)VAMPkito Wrote: There were a few things that needed to be worked out better. Particularly, I think we should have spread the word more as to what "VAMPS" is. I talked to a lot of HUGE-ASS J-Rock fans and asked them about the VAMPS tour, and they said they didn't even know who VAMPS were. I told them it was HYDE's new side project with K.A.Z. and they were like "O_O OMG REALLY?" Look at this forum for example. It's the only official English forum of HYDE (excluding MySpace and shit like that) and on a matter of scale, only a small portion of the fan base actually use it because they don't know about VAMPS.

Just so I don't get a bunch of comments on that paragraph, I am NOT criticizing the decision to form VAMPS as opposed to staying under HYDE's solo name. I think it's very good that K.A.Z. is getting the credit he deserves as opposed to staying in HYDE's shadow. I'm just saying that the band itself was poorly promoted. Most fans are currently under the understanding that HYDE hasn't released anything new for three years. When Gackt formed S.K.I.N., everybody knew about it... and as a result, even though we have yet to get so much as one god damn single from them, they continue to get good ratings. The primary reason for everyone knowing about S.K.I.N. being that Gackt was used as promotion. (That and Yoshiki from X-Japan is in it) - Whereas with VAMPS, it was advertised similar to a new, independent band consisting of young musicians with little band experience. Like one user said, if we used HYDE's popularity to the advantage a bit more, the VAMPS alertness would probably skyrocket.

Another thing I didn't particularly like was the choice of venues. I know this has nothing to do with the fan promotion, but I just want this to be heard or something. I believe topic was about things that did/didn't go right in the tour as opposed to just rpromotion. Anyway, I don't know about all the other shows, but the security was extremely limited in New York as we all know, and in Baltimore, there were only two guards whose primary goals were simply to check for cameras and other recording devices. To be fair, this was only a major problem in New York. Still, to prevent further New York incidents, I'd recommend looking into how the security functions when booking a venue. If not, maybe putting up signs such as "Violent dancing and fighting will not be tolerated in tonight's VAMPS concert. Anyone caught will be escorted from the building." - Not to mention SONAR never answers the freaking phone. =x - My father and I got lost in Baltimore looking for the damn place. We found it completely by accident. I don't want to rely on that kind of luck again, so in the future, I'd like it if they booked more reliable venues so that we can call for directions if we end up getting lost again.

Not to mention, the autograph session was a tad tyrannic. It shouldn't have mattered where we got the tickets as long as we can prove they're legit.

Back on the subject of actual promotion, things I did like, as others have said, is that we advertised them as MUSICIANS, not as JAPANESE rock stars, not as something that Anime fans will like, not as J-Rockers, but as simply rock stars. That's how J-Musicians -should- be advertised. As MUSICIANS. I'm sorry if it's bending the rules by talking about other bands. I'm using them as a comparison, though. When the Japanese Goth band, BLOOD, came to America on their final tour earlier this year, they were promoted as a Goth band, not as a Japanese Goth band, which is how it should be and that's how it was for VAMPS too. Another thing I'm glad about is that they weren't advertised as "Visual Kei" simply because they're not. A lot of people would probably use the term "Visual Kei" as a term to bring in profits from obsessed fangirls, rather they are VK or not.

As far as everything else, everyone pretty much already said it in detail, so I've no need to repeat it.

---------------------

VAMPkito, I agree with you entirely. VAMPS ARE IN FACT musicians, not just some product from Japan. I noticed that on all their promotional materials, it said, "From Japan," however, while it's true that they are from Japan and they do often sing in Japanese, they are first and foremost musicians. I think people forget that fact sometimes. My only concern is: how can we reach out to people who do not know about VAMPS? Any suggestions? It's hard because it's not like these people are just in one specific location, you know? I have been having difficulties locating people who are unaware about VAMPS' awesome music. Even though the tour is over, *lol* it seems as though we're back to square one, doesn't it?

Yep....because after the initial excitement and ticket buying anxiety was over with, we all concentrated on promotion. And here we are again.....they haven't even announced a new tour and we are already trying to promote them. Is this dedication or what? lol

The sad part is that I live in one of the most narrow-minded states in the world. Whenever I try to talk to anyone about VAMPS or any other Japanese musician, they shun it. They seem to have this mindset that if they can't understand it, they can't enjoy it. The music may be amazing, but if they can't understand it, it's simply not worth it. So it's difficult to promote it in my area or any of the surrounding areas. For that reason, it was such a shock to hear that VAMPS were coming to Baltimore. It was actually CLOSE to me.

Though that's not to say my area is the ONLY area under that mindset. The US in general is an extremely narrow-minded country, hence the rights of women to vote took years of protests to accomplish. I know I probably just bruised a ton of patriotic egos, but one can't deny that the US can be very narrow. But it's not something that you can blame it for. The fact is that the US, although the country consists of primarily immigrants, has very little culture shock. The only REAL culture shock we have throughout the US is that the country below us speaks Spanish and a less-than-decent percentage of the country above us speaks French.

So the only way I know how to spread the word would be to introduce one friend of similar interests to it. If they like it, tell them to spread it to another and so-forth. It would probably help if HYDE would get whomever watches over his site to add a link to the VAMPS website on HYDEIST. We can also refer to add "HYDE x K.A.Z." to every promotional banner we make instead of just VAMPS. Also... we need to find someway to get rid of the annoying confusion between Hide of X-Japan and HYDE. Don't get me wrong, I love Hide, but it really gets annoying when people mistake him for HYDE and say "HYDE is dead T_T" - Seriously, I've heard that so many times that it's aggravating =x - Yeah, if it weren't for people mistaking HYDE for Hide, we could really get more VAMPS alertness.

Interestingly, there is also an American musician named "Hyde" so it wouldn't hurt to cause some mass confusion between the two in order to introduce fans of one Hyde to the other. Lawl.

RE: After the tour...
The promotional flyers that we were sent came a little too early, I think. Maybe if we passed the flyers out months before the concerts, we could get the word out sooner. I know there weren't any concerts in the far south, but I know everywhere we went to hand out the US tour flyers, people knew either Kaz, Hyde, Vamps, or at least L'arc or Oblivion Dust. That's the only thing I can add...sorry. :/

I think the leaders (at least in Vegas) did a good job with what they had to contend with. The Hard Rock venue had no real barriers between the band and the crowd, so I think, if something like that occurs again, maybe the leaders could talk with the staff and get some sort of barrier to help the band out and keep a bit of crowd control. I forgot who I was talking to...but one girl at the concert was really nice. I think her name was Brittany? She put numbers on everyone's hands and that had a possibility of working. Maybe, instead of relying on numbers or "I was here first" policies, we stick to the number that is on the tickets, should Vamps come back. That way, the leaders could easily go in and out of line and help keep everyone in check. It isn't really their responsibility, I know, but someone needs to do it.

Jeez...I had to work the day after I got back from the concert and I am still on cloud 9. XDDD It was so awesome, it's hard to come back to "real" life now...*sigh* I really really really hope they come back again because that concert was EPIC. Definately. lol XD

Edit: Okay, I had another idea as soon as I hit the reply button. XD; I was reading VAMPkito's reply and realized something...I live in Georgia which, I'm sure, is far more close-minded than any other "southern" state I know (besides maybe Texas...), yet every year, we have a huge turn out for Anime Weekend Atlanta and Dragoncon. I can't speak for Dragoncon, but I know I'm asking off work for Anime Weekend Atlanta. What if we made something to hand out at the conventions to help spread the word to people that haven't kept up with the times, aka. don't know diddly about Vamps. ^^; I was actually one of those people until a friend told me about Hyde's new solo project (Since I had a small crush on Hyde in high school...*cough*). I'm sure at least a few of us on here are going to cons and things...And I don't mind handing out left-over flyers or promotions for their newest album, if we could print some out. People just need to have a reason to look up Vamps on youtube or myspace. ^_^

We have more time to start promoting. A bumpersticker with I'm a VAMPADDICT and the website link would be easy for starters. Bookmarks with a vampire theme and the link could be left lying around. Vampires are hot items right now so their name fits right in with the craze. Hopefully we can capitalize on that fact.

The Wonder Girls (Korean, I know...not Japanese) who are the opening band for the current Jonas Brothers tour may help people realize that other cultures have music that Americans can listen to, also.

First, WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?! DDDDD: How did I miss it? I wish I would've known the air date...T_T

And about the bumperstickers/bookmarks...^_^ I work in a bookstore. It would just be my pleasure to accidentally slip bookmarks in all the bags, put up a few in the music department, ect. That, and I can leave a bunch at the college library and lunchroom. Most of the time, promotions for things are all over my college and they never get thrown away.

And I totally didn't know Wonger Girls were opening for Jonas.........That is just this side of awesome. XD See, I always thought they had an American sound to their music...

The thing is, I don't think it's just the exposure, it's the fact that "Love Addict" is...well, written in English. It's a great song and people here can understand the words without having to research or learn a new language...Not to step on people's toes, but typical Americans (especially down here) don't want to use their brains much when it comes to music. If they can understand it and it sounds good, they like it. Sometimes the only reason they like it is because it sounds good (when the actual song could be about anything from gang rape to waking up -broke- in vegas.) If we want to appeal to the typical American music lover or rock lover, "Love Addict" is the best song for that.

I think the idea of promotional materials at other events is a good idea.

There were a couple of professional-looking postcard thingys that went around at the LA shows. Most ended up on the ground or in the trash but some people held onto them. I at least read it before I decided I was not interested in it.

People who go to other concerts could hand out materials with an "I recommend this group" comment. I think any kind of a con event is a good idea, too.

I'm almost done with my Masters program (thank God) and I always mention jrock in my introductions. Fellow students have told me that they had never heard of it before. For a Web2.0 class that I took last summer we had to design a 9+ page website. I designed mine around L'arc~en~Ciel. So 24 other people had to learn about them whether they wanted to or not.....bwaaaahhaaaaa Icon_blaugh

Lawl, we don't even have an Anime convention here. At all. :<

Sounds good, but like I said in another post, I don't want them to be advertised as specifically a Japanese band, but as a band in general. I mean, yeah, it's a good idea, especially since SEASON'S CALL was the second opening of BLOOD+, but those conventions shouldn't be the only places to advertise them. If anyone knows of any kind of music-based convention... well, that would be a good place as well.

Also, don't forget playlist streaming websites. It might be worth it to petition for a VAMPS section if they don't already have it.

LAWL, I once did a presentation with L'Arc for a computer course as well. Unfortunately, we didn't present them so only the teacher and myself knew about L'Arc after it was over :<

RE: After the tour...
Well, here in Mexico we tried promoting VAMPS with flyers on conventions, we didn't give many info, we only put a picture of VAMPS, the myspace and mexican street team adress and that's it. I've realized that when you try to talk to random people on the street or cons, most of them will run from you! people is busy, sometimes shy, sometimes sick of other people trying to sell them stuff. So, even at cons, even with anime/ J-music fans, a lot of flyers would end up on the floor after 20 secs. Then there is the fact that weird outfits call attention, so we got costumes (vampire costumes and hyde/KAZ costumes) and tried to get to people; if you do that, people will at least read what you give them before ditching it X-D
Eventually I found that the better way to get people's attentions is with "gifts" the buttons idea was born that way. You might remember the pink small buttons that were handed at San Diego and LA... when giving flyers, a 30-40% refused to accept them, but buttons, only around a 2% won't take them :-D some random people on the streets even ask for another one for their friend or whatever. Why? They are wearable... and THEY ARE FREE!
X-D

So I might suggest we go for "useful" stuff. Postcards and posters are nice, but they have no use but being collectible and pretty.
If we hand, like someone said already, bookmarks at libraries or bookstores, if we hand pens/pencils at schools, if we give bracelets/buttons to teenagers, at least we get people to keep VAMPS stuff long enough for their friends circle to see the name, and for them to grow curious, the exposure time is a key point for ads. Also candy from VAMPS might work, like the lollypops doctors give from new drugs, you have a candy and read the envelope while you wait... maybe we could go to places where people are bored, hungry... and stuck X-D For example the lines for public transportation, bureaucratic paperwork, school line for lunch, the queue to buy tickets for the movies, etc.

In closer circles or a more personal approach, the contact with the music and our fandom is our best weapon. At work they didn't care about VAMPS, even when I kept on telling how great they were, but I kept on wearing my VAMPS button until everyone became curious, they asked me for buttons and saw the myspace, listened to their music... one on my partners even cosplayed Ju-Ken and that's the picture he posted on his blog X-D
Also on my way back home I talked to random people, the cab driver, people sitting nearby... anyone. And told them about our journey to see VAMPS, how people traveled from different countries: Peru, Venezuela, China, Mexico, etc; also told them about the camping, and see everyone was very curious, because they said: If you guys did so much just to see them, then they must be an awesome band!!! So I gave them all flyers.
:-P

About them being japanese, either we say they are or not, people will realize they are once they see them on video or are unable to understand a song, people is xenophobic like that and will be hard to convince them... but we will!!!!!

I know this is not easy, pens, buttons, bracelets... they are all more expensive than paper. I know also we are not rich, I come from a 3rd world country, and just going to see VAMPS to USA without sightseeing at all left me in debt for the rest of the year X-D... but we love VAMPS, we have to make as much as we can for them in hope they will give their best too at shows, try to hit more cities and stuff. If we work together it is easier.

I think the pencils are a good idea. They could be left anywhere. All that would need to be on them would be VAMPS and the website address. The cheapest I could quickly find was $.11 each. But I am going to have to find another job first before I can pay for anything. I still have this tour to pay off, too........

LOL! me too!!! I already have a full time job and a family :-p But as soon as I'm done with paying this last trip (I think by Christmas X-D) I will make pencils. Fortunately, I have still some buttons :-D I made A LOT before USA tour.

I think you kinda missed the point. It's not that we're trying to hide the fact that they are Japanese, it's just that we don't want to treat them like they're not actually musicians or, to quote H.P., "products from Japan." We want them to get the same treatment as any musician would get domestically, not treated any different, for better or for worse, because they are from a different country. A lot of people look at foreign music and don't think of it as music in the same light as they do domestic music, and that's what we're trying to take away. We're trying to give VAMPS the normal band treatment and make it understood that even though they are Japanese, they are still musicians just like the musicians at home. In VAMPSy terms, you could say we're trying to "break down all the barriers."
