After the tour...
Ok, *lol* as we all know VAMPS have just completed their first tour in the U.S. For many of us, this experience was truly a dream-come-true and the autograph sessions just only added to the EPICness (is that even a word? *lol*) of the whole experience. Now that the tour is over, and because I feel like I have nothing better to do, I thought I would post a thread about things that worked and things that didn't work about this tour. I know this may be "counting our chickens before they hatch," but in the event that VAMPS should decide to return to the U.S., we should be ready.

I had never done this kind of promotion thing before, so it was very much a learning experience for me. With all of our combined efforts, we were successful in introducing more and more people to VAMPS' music. Let's continue those efforts, so that way when VAMPS return, their tickets will sell out like hotcakes. ;) What do you guys think? How can we continue to spread the word about VAMPS' music to people? What were things that you liked about the promotion of this tour that you felt worked? What were the things that you felt didn't work?

Ok, there is only so much we could do about the disorganization of the promotion company and VAMPS' staff, but let's think about stuff that we can actually do. *lol* Since the tour ended, I've just been kinda' twiddling my thumbs and thinking, "Now what?" *lol* AnyVAMPS, have a good one everyone and I'm looking forward to reading your responses.

RE: After the tour...
Oh my gosh, I don't know what to do with myself now.

Well, VAMPS had better drag their little butts back here next year and I had better be on the team again Icon_biggrin

I, too, have never done anything like this before. So it really was a huge learning experience. And for those of us who want to work in the music industry one day (me!) I think it's a great learning curve. Gives us a chance to actually do something and gain work-ish experience.

And of course, the more and longer we do things the better we get. Personally, I think we did pretty good for a little rag rag team of fans working on short notice. We were semi organized, had goals, worked together, all that. Not bad for newbies with little money!

As someone who knows nothing about promotion here are my views on things:

- I DO liked that we promoted them EVERYWHERE. Not just anime/jrock/japanese sites but music sites in general. We didn't trap them in the animesphere, we put information on just regular music websites. I think that is great because I want them to be seen and respected as a rock band not as that-band-those-weird-wapanese-kids-listen-to.

Also, it gets their name out there. Even if people don't check out the band, their name has at least been seen. And the more people see them the more likely they are to check them out.

-Even though I don't think they got played on any radios(?), we still at least did SOMETHING rather than nothing. They're not going to get anywhere without fans, so it's great that we tried our best.

-I LOVE the fact that people were willing to donate money to get things done. I hate the fact that none of us are millionaires so our funding was limited. Paid advertisements on popular websites helps them get some exposure so even if we didn't convert any fans we did - once again - get their name thrown out there.

-I do think we should have used HYDE's fame to our advantage a bit more. VAMPS is still new-ish so a lot of people aren't familiar with them, especially casual fans who might like HYDE/K.A.Z but don't keep up with all the news. So maybe we should have used their names a bit more, like: HYDExK.A.Z (VAMPS) USA TOUR! - or something like that. Put their names on everything to catch people's attention.

I think we should have done that when advertising on jmusic/japanesey places to catch people familiar with HYDE/K.A.Z. And then on regular music websites just pushed them as VAMPS because people there are less likely to be familiar with Hydaz so there's no need to push their names there.

-I like that we had a leader (You H.P!) and we all respected you. It makes it easier to get things going when there is someone directing rather than everyone running around like headless chickens. But at the same time anyone could through out ideas and we'd work together modifying ideas and supporting each other.

I keep trying to think of more ways we can promote them without breaking the bank. What have we missed? What are other bands doing that we're not? If we're going to keep promoting VAMPS in the future then we need to learn what tricks other marketers use. And of course, we need patience. These things take time.

I am sad that the whole tour did not sell out. It feels like we did everything - flyers, radio requesting, paid ads, posting info everywhere - and they still didn't sell out. I keep thinking "what could we have done better?" I feel very disappointed it didn't go the way we wanted it to.

I hope they do come back in the future and we'll get to try again and help them sell out.

I think the main problem is that the music is just not known....and we did what we could to correct that problem. And we had mimimal effect.

When I was driving all over San Diego County putting out official fliers and my own fliers, I did mention Hyde's name.....and L'arc-en-ciel's name. Many, many people, even in the Japanese communities, just stared at me. They did not have a clue who I was talking about. :(

I overheard a couple of people say that they found out about the concert from the posters or from reading an ad in a Japanese newspaper. So we reached a few that way.

My own opinion is that somehow we need to get them airplay. And not just once....but airplay. I am cheap and I personally would not pay $30 to go and see a band that I had never heard of. But if I liked their music, then I might go. If I really liked their music, then yes I would definitely go. So to me, the question is how to get the airplay?

I think another brick wall is the fact that you cannot walk into a music outlet and buy their CDs. People are not going to want to pay for shipping from Japan. Yes, Amazon does carry Love Addict but what about the price? Almost twice of most CDs plus how are you going to find it when the band is unknown to most people?

I am personally willing to keep on the one radio station in the San Diego area to play their music. But since I have now lost my full time job with no other employment in sight, I can no longer afford to be donating money for the cause. But bugging the radio station costs nothing but my time so that is feasible.

The above is only my opinions. Please feel free to disagree.....

RE: After the tour...
Did anyone read hyde's tour blog where he said love addict would be on MTV? Having their music heard is the best way to promote them we did all we could with flyers and internet promotion etc but for them to be REALLY known people have to hear and see them and not just once or twice.

When love addict airs on MTV are there anyway we can request the video to be played? I dont really watch MTV so i dont know too much about what goes on with it. If love addict is a success on there maybe more and more PV's will be added and then maybe we might get some radio time.

I think those two things are what VAMPS desperately need and of course us fans here to back them up and keep requesting their videos/songs as much as we can along with keeping up with the internet promotion.

Maybe we could write concert reviews on some music website or something? That way people could read just how awesome VAMPS are live.
L'arc~en~Ciel 20th L'Anniversary was amazing!!

RE: After the tour...
I wonder how many people actually still watch MTV for music but then again I am not so much aware of what is popular or whatnot. I do think vamps should get as much exposure as possible because they are so awesome. Of course, if i had it my way, i would make it so that all my favorite Japanese singers were popular over here because there are so many awesome singers and groups who should be heard (especially angela aki and kokia).

I think it was posted on another thread that it already aired??? I also personally never hear anyone talk about MTV anymore and I work with a lot of youth.

So...how did everyone here learn about VAMPS/Hyde/K.A.Z/L'arc, etc? From manga to anime to jrock to ? That seems to be the usual progression of most people who I have talked to.

I see a lot of youth in my part-time jobs. I am going to start casually asking them where they hear about new music. If you are in the same situation, you could do the same. That way we would get an idea of where to put/link VAMPS info. Links to their site from vampire discussion areas might help. ????

We have more time to start promoting. A bumpersticker with I'm a VAMPADDICT and the website link would be easy for starters. Bookmarks with a vampire theme and the link could be left lying around. Vampires are hot items right now so their name fits right in with the craze. Hopefully we can capitalize on that fact.

I still wear my VAMPS street team shirt when I go out and my t-shirt that I made and I plan to continue to do so. Once in a while, someone asks about it and I am always happy to explain.

The Wonder Girls (Korean, I know...not Japanese) who are the opening band for the current Jonas Brothers tour may help people realize that other cultures have music that Americans can listen to, also.

In terms of "LOVE ADDICT" being played on MTV, I think it will definitely help. However, given the fact that there is no information about it yet (i.e. when it will air, on which MTV, etc...), it will be hard to promote VAMPS that way. I mean, once we have the information, we can request the video like crazy. I created an account on mtv.com, maybe you guys should too? That way, we can start talking about VAMPS in the forums and stuff.

I also think branching out of the J-Pop/Anime circle and start visiting normal music sites could also help. I think it would be good to target new, different people. Since we've got time, we have more of an opportunity to "convert" people. *lol* Or, at least, let them know who VAMPS are. I think most of you know that was the problem the first time around: many, many people were ignorant about VAMPS & their music. I want to work on trying to change that.

Also, jumping off of cathb's question, for those of you who went to any of the shows (maybe even those who didn't), how did you find out about the tour to begin with? That way, along with cathb's question, we can better pinpoint what promotion tactics worked better than others.

RE: After the tour...
I found out through VAMPS Official Myspace and Kaz's Official Site and Tracy of course told me first thing because it was announced while I was at home and I can't view myspace on my computer at home...long story LOL.

I think MTV if it is aired here in the States would be a very good outlet for VAMPS. I think they should look at VH1 and other music shows like that. I think personally if we know a few months in advance, like at LEAST 4 months ahead of time we could pull it off a bit better. I know there was several people who asked about VAMPS while Tracy and I were either in the airport or on our shuttle buses. We handed them some of the promo cards of VAMPS. I also think that we should have leaders for each area of America. Like East Coast Team Leader handles East Coast promotion, Southern America Team Leader handles that area and so on and so on. So the responsiblility doesn't fall all on ONE person. So they don't get stressed out. Like take for instance me, who lives in Kansas. I could handle middle America. Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, N. & S. Dakota, Colorado and Missouri. Or it could be split up even more than that too. I just think it is alot of work for one person or even a handful of people to handle a whole country. That's my personal thoughts. Or we could even start a paypal account just solely for VAMPS related things. Banners, glow sticks, promotion etc. Just some thoughts.

Actually- strangely enough for me- I didn't follow that progression. I do in fact watch a lot of anime, but I had never really gone "omg I must have all the songs by the band at the beginning of this show" once in my life
My introduction actually started with my online sister sending me a video of Gackt singing Mizerable live on YouTube and going "Don't you think he's hot?" and I just loved the song XDDDD

I found out mainly through Myspace actually... that and my mom suddenly sending me a text while I was at college going "When's the VAMPS concert" ans she helped me get there. I keep up really well on Myspace and Facebook on all Jrock news involving my favorite bands usually... and I say usually cos I'm not doing too well right now because I'm on dial-up ><;;;

RE: After the tour...
There were a few things that needed to be worked out better. Particularly, I think we should have spread the word more as to what "VAMPS" is. I talked to a lot of HUGE-ASS J-Rock fans and asked them about the VAMPS tour, and they said they didn't even know who VAMPS were. I told them it was HYDE's new side project with K.A.Z. and they were like "O_O OMG REALLY?" Look at this forum for example. It's the only official English forum of HYDE (excluding MySpace and shit like that) and on a matter of scale, only a small portion of the fan base actually use it because they don't know about VAMPS.

Just so I don't get a bunch of comments on that paragraph, I am NOT criticizing the decision to form VAMPS as opposed to staying under HYDE's solo name. I think it's very good that K.A.Z. is getting the credit he deserves as opposed to staying in HYDE's shadow. I'm just saying that the band itself was poorly promoted. Most fans are currently under the understanding that HYDE hasn't released anything new for three years. When Gackt formed S.K.I.N., everybody knew about it... and as a result, even though we have yet to get so much as one god damn single from them, they continue to get good ratings. The primary reason for everyone knowing about S.K.I.N. being that Gackt was used as promotion. (That and Yoshiki from X-Japan is in it) - Whereas with VAMPS, it was advertised similar to a new, independent band consisting of young musicians with little band experience. Like one user said, if we used HYDE's popularity to the advantage a bit more, the VAMPS alertness would probably skyrocket.

Another thing I didn't particularly like was the choice of venues. I know this has nothing to do with the fan promotion, but I just want this to be heard or something. I believe topic was about things that did/didn't go right in the tour as opposed to just rpromotion. Anyway, I don't know about all the other shows, but the security was extremely limited in New York as we all know, and in Baltimore, there were only two guards whose primary goals were simply to check for cameras and other recording devices. To be fair, this was only a major problem in New York. Still, to prevent further New York incidents, I'd recommend looking into how the security functions when booking a venue. If not, maybe putting up signs such as "Violent dancing and fighting will not be tolerated in tonight's VAMPS concert. Anyone caught will be escorted from the building." - Not to mention SONAR never answers the freaking phone. =x - My father and I got lost in Baltimore looking for the damn place. We found it completely by accident. I don't want to rely on that kind of luck again, so in the future, I'd like it if they booked more reliable venues so that we can call for directions if we end up getting lost again.

Not to mention, the autograph session was a tad tyrannic. It shouldn't have mattered where we got the tickets as long as we can prove they're legit.

Back on the subject of actual promotion, things I did like, as others have said, is that we advertised them as MUSICIANS, not as JAPANESE rock stars, not as something that Anime fans will like, not as J-Rockers, but as simply rock stars. That's how J-Musicians -should- be advertised. As MUSICIANS. I'm sorry if it's bending the rules by talking about other bands. I'm using them as a comparison, though. When the Japanese Goth band, BLOOD, came to America on their final tour earlier this year, they were promoted as a Goth band, not as a Japanese Goth band, which is how it should be and that's how it was for VAMPS too. Another thing I'm glad about is that they weren't advertised as "Visual Kei" simply because they're not. A lot of people would probably use the term "Visual Kei" as a term to bring in profits from obsessed fangirls, rather they are VK or not.

As far as everything else, everyone pretty much already said it in detail, so I've no need to repeat it.
