Forum Language Layout VOTE - Tokio - 03-06-2010

Spanish: DiseƱo del foro de idiomas - VOTEN (thanks to Usagi)

----------------

Okay, I don't care either way how to forum is set up but since YOU ALL will be using the forum as well then I want your opinions on which way we do this for the languages. Most votes wins.

Like I mentioned before, we're going to have sections for popular languages to give all VAMPS fans a place to chat/organize stuffs.

There are two different layout ideas as to how to set this up. So..

Layout 1

Give each language their own forum with tour dates as a subforum.
Ex:
Language A
--- General Chat
--- Date 1
--- Date 2
Language B
--- General Chat
--- Date 1
--- Date 2

Then the English section will be set up like last time.

This keeps each language together so they essentially have their own mini forum.

Mockup:

Layout 2

Give each language a subforum under each date.
Ex:
Date 1
-- Lang 1
-- Lang 2
Date 2
-- Lang 1
-- Lang 2

Now, we can either have the main 'date' forum be English, or we can set English as a subforum.

This may/may not be easier for people who speak multiple languages. They'll have the multi-languages right there under each date.

Mockup:

--------

Now, either way I think I can set up a public group that users can join...I can make it so that the group doesn't see the foreign sections, so those who don't want to see them don't have to.

If someone has another idea then feel free to share. Preferably with pictures so I can see how you would do it.

Vote now or forever hold your peace!

Voting ends...when the dates are released.

RE: Forum Language Layout VOTE - Mme. H - 03-06-2010

Tokio, thanks for addressing this and getting our feedback!

I really prefer that the dates be kept together, as in the 2nd layout, except I like the option you've mentioned of have the different languages be subsections of each date. I think it encourages fans from all over to have a sense of togetherness, and pop around to feedback from other fans in any language that they can at least partially understand.

Two things about translation:

First, could we start now, look for one bilingual fan from each language, who knows English and one other language, to do capsule translations and moderate that language in the forum?

Second, if and until we have those people in place, is it beyond the capacity of this forum to allow machine translation? Although I realize it's kind of inadequate, at least it would be a way to get some idea of what other fans are talking about, on the forum - especially at the point that people are planning trips to see the show in another part of the world, and when reports of the lives come back!

Re: Moderators

Yeah, I'm planning on getting moderators for a different languages. I've just been waiting for the tour dates so I can see what the main languages will be. I don't want to say...get a German translator if only 4 people speak German.

My plan has been to find out the languages then put together a post looking for bilingual mods. Along with what I want them to do/what they can't do, and so on.

Re: Machine Translation

There is no forum option to automatically translate but I could try adding a google translate option at the top, then people can select what language they want.

I agree with Madame Hyde in having the dates first. This, unlike other forums, has a very light layer, I mean we don't get publicity, nor is it full of heavy images, so I think we can all take a look at all the dates and I dare say all the posts even if we are not attending to that particular one. Many people did that last year, we would go and read all the dates posts or at least 90% of them, they are usually short.

I also love the idea of having people help translating, we could code translations on a certain color to add them to the conversation without interfering with the original post. What I don't know is if it would be possible to allow the editing of posts without creating chaos, or if you could limit the allowance.
If you need volunteers, I volunteer as I speak spanish... my english is a little poor, but better than nothing I guess :-p

Regarding the poll... I have been trying to figure what would be easier in programming, but I don't know about that! >.O What would be easier to handle, from your POV Tokio?

Both ways take the same amount of time, I think. So either way is fine with me.

RE: Forum Language Layout VOTE - Usagi Hoshino - 03-06-2010

I work with websites! So I see the first layout as more easy on the eye. But just a comment. Switch the order of the forums:

i.e: -English block
- Non English block

Also, if the non English block is called non English then the english block should be English instead of just shows (it gets a little confusing).

I would like to moderate some of the spanish forums if you need me to. I also know french in case you need help.

Awesome job *hug* <3

Well, yes, English block will be called English. It's called 'shows' in the mockup b/c that's what it's called right now on the forum..and I added the sections so I could screen shot it.

I thought about doing English block first but I think that might be messier. B/c english block won't be grouped in a subforum, it will all be on the index like it was last year so that section might be really big depending on how many locations they have.

So it makes sense to put the biggest section on the bottom. The non-english section could be collapsed by clicking the little square on the top right on the category...that will hide it for those that don't want to see it.

Oh! I get it now. It makes sense that way ^_^! Icon_domokun

RE: Forum Language Layout VOTE - VAMPkito - 03-07-2010

Personally I prefer the second one. While the first layout is better in looks, the second has a lot more utility, which I think is more important.

And I also speak some French, so if you need any assistance in that department, I'd be glad to lend you my aid. (Granted, a language is like riding a bike. You never forget, but you have a hard time remembering if you don't use it often. With that said, I don't know how well I'd perform in that area ^^;)
