We've been planning on winning the Powerball lottery for the last few weeks, but somehow that hasn't happened yet... *grumble*

I can't really afford my VAMPS/jrock habit, but you've got to have priorities ;)

Ha ha ha...yeah, I'm employed by a temp agency. But that's just it, all of my jobs are temporary. It sucks not knowing whether or not you'll have a job one week from the next. Right now, my last job just ended, so now I have to wait for another. It really bites. Sometimes I wonder: "What the hell did I just spend 3.5 years going to college and $20,000 for?" My repayment for my student loans begins soon, so we'll see how much longer I can support my "VAMPSaddict" habit. ;)

I hear you! I keep saving up for some of the older stuff that I want and then BAM.....you have to buy the new stuff that just came out. I'm having no luck with the lottery either.
I currently work 2 jobs but my full time is going to part time come July 1 and my part time is laying off and I think I am on the slaughter list. This economy needs to start turning around quickly or we are all going to go under.

I finally finish up my Masters in May. I'm like you....why did I do of all this miserable work and spend the money when there are no jobs to be found? Good luck with those loans!!!

RE: Facebook Advertising - oscura_gotham - 05-28-2009

I went to school first in Puerto Rico (psychology) and got a bachelor's. I continued towards my masters but didn't finish it. The career change happened in NY; I went to the Chubb Institute (they changed their name though, can't remember it). I decided I loved design and I got a diploma in Multimedia Design. So now I'm a Web & Graphic Designer. I don't regret the change at all. I worked full time for years and then BAM! layoffs all over the place. Now I'm part-time. But this will change soon.

Oh wow, that's cool! About your being web/graphic designer, that is. I'm supposed to study graphic design, but since I haven't been able to get a job, I've had to defer for a year. I so psyched about studying graphic design too. The classes sounded really interesting. I had graduated a semester early, hoping to get a full time job right away, so that way I could earn enough money to pay back one of my student loans and maybe have some extra money to go to Japan. I've been dying to visit Japan and see some of my friends. But yeah...it wasn't meant to be I guess. The economy tanked in my last semester and by the time I came back home, people were being laid off left & right. It's sad, really. *sigh*

I just have my internship ._." although I work online as a copywriter for a web creating agency and as translator, the pay is based on projects so sometimes I've something and sometimes I don't ._." I'm a year away from graduating from college T_T!

Don't worry, economy always fluctuates so what goes down eventually will go up!

RE: Facebook Advertising - melissa - 05-29-2009

I went through the entire thread, and wow, didn't think it'd seriously be THIS bad. I know it's bad timing, but I'm actually thinking about quitting my current job, coz I can't stand my employer. I think the economy in Canada is slightly better than that down south in the States for now. so hopefully it won't be so bad by the time I do decide to leave. I'm just waiting out my time for mid-July, so that I'll have been employed for 2 straight years... T___T

What does everybody think about job placement agencies? I've never contacted one before, but I've heard the pros and cons. if I can't find a job, then chances are I'll need to go to an agency for help.

Agencies do help. While you are job searching on your own, they search for you as well so the chances of you finding a job increase. I'd recommend that you start your search while you are still employed and not leave your current job until you find a new one. That way you have something solid when you quit. That's how I did it a couple of years ago.

One thing though, to be honest, agencies have only found me a job once. All the others have been just me doing my search and applying. So I trust me more lol. But yeah the agencies are not a bad thing. Just remember that they need you more than you need them (they do get paid for placing you in a job).

Good luck!

I'm employed by a temp agency and they do a pretty good job finding me a job, especially since I have some limitations (i.e. I went so school where having a car wasn't necessary, so I never had one and still don't have one). I would recommend consulting them first and if they find a job for you, quit your current job then. I'd stick out your current job for a bit, despite having a crappy boss because in these times, we really can't afford to be picky. Or at least, I can't afford to be picky. ;) *lol*

RE: Facebook Advertising - celeste_ - 05-29-2009

My temp/placement/contract agency SUCKS.
Most of them do, to be honest. If it's the kind of thing where they just find you a job, they get paid, and then you're done with them then it might be different, but most of the time you work for that agency directly for the duration of your job.

I work at a mega-corporation, and have for the last 4.5 years (in 1.5 year intervals, where I take 3 months off in between) but I'm *employed* by my agency. The megacorp pays significantly more money for me than I actually make, which goes to the agency's pockets. I also have no benefits whatsoever and cannot take part in anything that could be considered a benefit for the Mega-corp employees (parties, meetings, free swag). And I can be let go at any time, for any reason. My agency also changes the rules about things like holiday pay and vacation pay and then doesn't tell us because they legally don't have to! There are often holidays that we are forced to take, but can not get paid for because of how messed up their rules are.

In conclusion - temp/placement/contract agencies generally blow, but it's better than having no job at all. :)
